Happy Halloween!

We were back to work today and the town was back to normal so of course our kids would not let us forget that it was Halloween! Spiderman and Spider girl were very excited to be able to shoot webs at people. We visited a few dock neighbors before spending less than an hour trick-or-treating in Rose Haven. An urgent need for a bathroom cut us short however it was more than enough time to pull in a big haul!

Sandy visits

It was loud, it was rocky, but otherwise it wasn't bad. We ate at Honey's Harvest for lunch every day to check on the neighborhood and it seems all fared well. They shut off power to the pier tonight intentionally due to high water, but that's pretty much the only power outage we've seen. Dodged the bullet!

Sandy (a.k.a. Frankenstorm) preps

Yesterday we took down the genoa and some of the dodger, added lines and fenders, and filled the water. What did that leave for today? Pumpkins! We hit a farm for a corn maze and pumpkins, then carved them up while watching football. We saw 34kts this morning, then it was less than 20 this afternoon, and now the action is picking back up. Rain is coming down, too. School and work have been cancelled for tomorrow so now...we wait!

Cruising on the Lady Maryland

Despite the threatening weather, morning events were still on and we had a great sail on the Lady Maryland with Captain Michael and crew. It was really a great morning to be on the water!

Now it's time to head home and prep for Frankenstorm!

Downrigging Weekend

Well, with "Frankenstorm" on its way we are sticking with our plans for the weekend! We got to Chestertown tonight just in time to walk out on the 231 bridge and watch a great fireworks show behind the tall ships. The kids and I splashed around in the pool and now they are resting up for our sail on the Lady Maryland tomorrow. Should be fun!

2013 Trek Across Maine: Jody Powers - American Lung Association

2013 Trek Across Maine: Jody Powers - American Lung Association

Well, I guess I'm in!  I haven't been on my "nice" bike since right after Katreina was born.  She's 6.  But that's ok, because I know a few folks who are working hard every day just to breathe.  I have quite a few friends who work in the hospitality industry (hostesses, waitresses, bartenders, etc.) who have to put up with second-hand smoke just to bring home a paycheck.  ALA is working to bring that to an end, and I'm ready to work with them!

Fall fun

We stayed "home" again this weekend and invited family and friends out for day sails on the bay. Saturday we had the cousins over for a day out on the water, a little grilling, and finally a bonfire on the beach. Today some friends joined us for their first sail! The whole weekend we were treated to great weather and I think everyone had fun. Next week? The tall ships at Chestertown!

Fall swap-out

With light wind tonight we swapped out the full-batten main for the non-batten main. We are now ready for more fall sailing!

Boat Show 2012

Well, another boat show is over! This year, the Captain got to go "solo" on Friday to research his list, then he, "swab," and I went back today to make some purchases! A dinghy, a 9.8hp outboard, a winch, lunch, and 3 Painkillers and we called it a day! Swab took a power nap on the way home and the little girl just hooked me up with a leg/foot massage. I think we are all happy!

Wye not?

The weather almost made this a tale of two weekends--high near 80 on Saturday, high barely 50 on Sunday. But the winds were favorable for a trip to the Wye River so we set sail! We thoroughly enjoyed the warm, steady sailing Saturday and anchored in Dividing Creek off the Wye River with about a half dozen other boats. The front started to move through as we anchored, but that didn't stop us from taking a nice dinghy ride to explore the nearby pubic lands. When we returned I even got adventurous and asked to be hoisted aloft so I could put up the last of our Halloween decorations. Of course the wind kicked up, but it's done!

While it was cooler, almost PacNorWest-like, this morning we had another nice day of sailing back home. I guess fall is officially here!
